What is Architect in the House?
Architect in the House is an innovative scheme run by Shelter, the housing and homelessness charity, and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). We match homeowners with a local RIBA chartered architect who gives up an hour of their time for a design consultation. In exchange, the homeowner makes a suggested donation of £40 to Shelter. In 2011 the TV channel Home is title sponsor of the scheme, and Rockwool is associate sponsor.
Whether it’s inspiration for a study, an extra bedroom, or just better living space you need, an architect can offer creativity and professional advice that will help bring your ideas to life.

Sarah Beeny, the television presenter best known for her no-nonsense property advice, is supporting Architect in the House wholeheartedly, promoting the scheme on Twitter and in interviews.
Sarah explains: ‘It offers the chance for a fresh pair of eyes to look at your property and come up with suggestions that you hadn’t thought of. And it’s for a worthy cause: Shelter is a great charity that helps those at the very blunt end of homelessness in the country’.
In 2010 the award-winning actress Tamzin Outhwaite had her own consultation to explore how to make the most of the basement space in our home and was amazed by the range of ideas her architect suggested.
Tamsin said: ‘I’d recommend Architect in the House to anyone thinking of making changes to their home. Speaking with the architect was really easy and relaxed, we just sat down and had a chat over a cup of tea.
The expertise and the inspiration we received was invaluable, and it’s great to think that by taking part you’re supporting Shelter’s vital work with families affected by homelessness and bad housing.’
George Clarke, architect and presenter of TV’s ‘Restoration Man’, recommended Architect in the House to homeowners looking to make more of their property in 2010.
George said: ‘Architects play a key role in any successful home improvement venture, ensuring your project is well designed and thought through.
‘Only an architect can give you the big picture, offering insights in to the latest trends in property design and advising on everything from finding builders to choosing fixtures and fittings.’
