Historically part of Cheshire, the town lies on flat ground on the south bank of the River Mersey, 1.9 miles south of Stretford, 2.5 miles northeast of Altrincham, and 5.2 miles southwest of the city of Manchester.

Brooklands is the most densely populated area. Most of the parks, including Worthington and Walton, are in the central and southern areas, leaving Ashton upon Mersey and Sale Moor with a shortage of accessible green space.
