Since setting up in practice, the Solo Practitioner's Group has been a bit of a lifeline for me. At first it was a forum to meet peers and get practical support for setting up an architectural practice. But on reflection I've made some good friends. We've run events together, from seminars, debates and stuff during the Love Architecture festival including treasure hunts!
The SPG is open to RIBA chartered architects, who are sole principles. We meet regularly in Knutsford on the first tuesday of every month, where we not only provide some nosh, but also provide: technical CPDs, essential for keeping up on top of the RIBA CPD record; Q and As with property consultants, to keep on top of current legislation, whether planning policy, health and safety, building regs or contract law; business meetings to keep abreast of RIBA activities and practice problems. We also get access to RIBA CPD tickets in Liverpool and Manchester, which we take in turn to go to. (Annual membership to the SPG is only £35, which more than covers a single attendance at the RIBA CPD) Sometimes, the car journeys to the SPG alone make the trip worthwhile, as a group of us, from a similar destination thrash out current practice issues. In-between the monthly sessions, whenever practice issues arise, group emails resolve problems, from consultant recommendations, to sharing party wall knowledge, recent planning changes etc. So if you've not been to an SPG meeting, get in touch and come down to a session, you might even enjoy it! Please contact me to come to the next meeting, or check out our website http://www.spgarchitects.co.uk/ Lisa Raynes current chairman of the Solo Practitioners Group (until April 2014) 07989 744 336 |
