Last weekend (30th March) we were lucky enough to go to Helsinki for the weekend.
After the kids were in safe hands, we took the train to Manchester Airport (10mins) and flew to Helsinki arriving at 10.30pm on the Friday night. Given that we were flying back on the Sunday, we only had one full day in the city. So we were determined to make the most of it.
We took a return ferry trip to Suomenlinna from Helsinki first to get an understanding of the geography

The private islands are used for summer houses and house private Saunas-Saunas are a big thing in Finland

Back on shore, the first purchase was this hand dyed wool cape.
We scoured the design shops and headed to 2nd Cycle Artek- the coolest shop in Helsinki. Saw an original Reitveld chair amongst many other design classics
The Rock Church is a real life 007 villains lair. But from underneath it feels like a scene from Independence Day
Next stop Grand Central Station
And then to Alvar Aaltos house. We took a taxi there. It cost 17 euros per adult, and we had a private tour round. Tours run at 1pm, 2pm, 3pm daily.

We ended the evening at a Finnish restaurant, exhausted but content!
